We're thinking of Sicily between Dec 27 - Jan 3 - any suggestions on places to stay? We'd fly to Catania (most likely) or Palermo.

Roughly how far is it between the two airports by car, and being this "island" how long is it to drive coast to coast, say North to South and East to West?

Suggestions please!

Can't answer any of your specific questions, but I did visit the island a few years ago and absolutely loved Siracusa. If you like decayed former-glory, Ortegia Island is fabulous.
