The V&A Pleasure and Pain exhibition visited by Stockings HQ

Being slightly obsessed with shoes, I felt duty bound to hotfoot it down (excuse the pun) to the glorious V&A to visit the Shoes: Pleasure and Pain exhibition currently on display. There were lots of people falling head over heels with some of the beautiful shoes on show. I thought the red and gold brocade boots were magnificent, followed by my dream pair of Cinderella stilettos, crafted by the master shoemaker himself, Manolo Blahnik. I won’t tell you how much I would love to slide my Cervin Champ Elysees 100%... Read More

Autumnal hosiery at Stockings HQ

I’m back from summer break, looking forward to moody autumnal mornings and smoky bonfire lit evenings. I am fancying spicy casseroles, wearing warm opaque stockings, over sized jumpers, whilst relaxing by the fire indulging with a toffee apple and small tot of whiskey. By the time summer comes to an end I’m ready for the autumn/winter colour palate to excite my senses, and sophisticated silhouettes to help hide the indulgence of all of the above.

The Stockings HQ Guide to Coloured Opaques

With spring fashions hitting the shops, you may want to overhaul your wardrobe for the new season. Thanks to our British weather (snowing in March!), it’s not quite warm enough to bare flesh just yet. It’s also worth remembering that times are still tough for many, and it can be costly to replace full outfits. Coloured and patterned opaques are a fashionable and affordable way to update a look, and can inject some style into the clothing you already have. Here are some basic tips and ideas if you are... ‘Stocking up’ on small purchases…

With a chilly outlook in the financial forecast, not mention our weather-based one, we would be forgiven for wanting to cheer ourselves up on a Saturday shopping trip with a purchase or two – they don’t call it ‘retail therapy’ for nothing! The size and price of the purchases however, has changed dramatically. Rather than designer goods and large gadgets, the best things do seem to come in small packages. It’s now widely known as ‘The Lipstick Effect’ – a phenomenon indicating that consumers will spend in hard times regardless,... Read More

Stockings, fires and other urban myths

(Edited from contributions to the Stockings HQ discussion forum) – I saw on a news report here in the USA (I think it was 20/20 or some such) that safety experts now advise women not to travel via plane while wearing any type of nylon hosiery. The reason given was that, in case of an emergency landing when there are flames in the fuselage, the heat would melt the hosiery onto the woman’s legs, causing severe burns, and lessening her chances of escaping from the craft. The expert advised women... Read More

Stockings and the march of time

(Edited from contributions to the Stockings HQ discussion forum) – There was a good article in the Sunday Times at the weekend on the return of ’50s fashion, complete with pictures of lots of ladies, including celebrities, ranging from Diana Dors to Queen Elizabeth II wearing those beautiful flowing dresses that were so typical of the period. Guys then didn’t know how lucky they were – tights hadn’t even been invented and good girls never wore trousers (indeed even bad girls were seldom allowed to do so). If we really... Read More
